ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN [FIVE] - RE-CONCEIVING ARCHITECTURE AND TIME

 

[2013] BETWIXT [CONCEPT] - Providing any form of architecture to show 'care'. Seating and shelter will enhancethe waiting experience outside of the DHA. The main structure is made of local and recycled timber. The building can become a modular system. Once it becomes redundant to the DHA it can be used for a future park proposal to the east of the site.

 

WAITING - Waiting causes one to feel powerless, helpless and vulnerable, but stillit ishard to understand these stages. A liminal experience is often shrouded in secrecy and ambiguity. Waiting is a quotidian occurence of life, an unconscious and unarticulated experience. Currently the norm is that if you're not busy you will not be successful. We wait because of despair and hope - Hope because it is grounded in a longing for and expectation of a new status.

 

CURRENT SITUATION - Between 80 to 300 asylum seekers per dy apply at the DHA and sometimes need to sleep in the deserted land across the street to increase their chance of getting a temporary permit. It is the only element that shows any care for the applicants. Here they get mugged and raped. Police are occasionally ordered to remove all temporary shelters, it has led to visits at night to arrest or extort them for bribes. The natural occurence of rain, cold and heat have to be endured. Fighting for a position in the queue has led to riots.

 

A POWER STRUGGLE - The omission occurs because many authors of management write and think from a position of power, whereas waiting is usually experienced by the less-powerful.

 

PROPOSED - The building will offer its protection and become a time icon, it compliments the surrounding materials that it is built from. The timber structure is strong and light and it will influence as many as 300 lives per day. The building can't fix the problem alone, it will need a new management system. Forms are filled in upon arrival. Each person receives a number that allows them to sit anywhere and wait to be called. This can rule out bribes and crammed lines.
