ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN [FOUR] - IDENTITY

AIM _ To design a new model that aids in the densification and regenerating of Mamelodi. It should serve as a precedent for future developments and should increase social activitues and inter-action in Mamelodi.

CIVIC BUILDINGS _ CABE, London [Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment] found that local authorities manage design issues as follows:

38% have a registered architect in their planning department.

23% of their planning department make use of a design panel in assessing the design quality of planning applications in general.

22% have refused planning permissin principally on design grounds in more than 20 instances in the past year.

SOLUTION [to locate an area with ENERGY] _ Communal soccer field, the centre of where things are happening. The existing energy should be followed and harnessed

POSIBILTIES _ Creating a new node [near the existing energy]

Accessability [intergrate transportation infrastructure]

Activate street [main street and internal street]

Using local technology, labour and materials

Must function well into the evening

Generate connectivity [green lung]

Adaptable and flexible use

Increase zone of influence

Introduce public spaces

Introduce green spaces

Introduce education

SKYLINE OF MAMELODI _ Mamelodi mainly consists out of single storey units. It might be more suitable and inviting  to have a 3 storey building, and allow future buildings to have more verticality

A NEW HEART FOR THIS TOWN _ Ratio of...

HOUSING : PUBLIC DEVELOPMENT : GREEN SPACE is deficit

The southern part of Mamelodi is most under developed. Entering from the west of Mamelodi, formal houses are densely packed, but decreases closer to the site. But exploring Mamelodi on foot changes ones’ opinion immediately. A change in there moral is visible when the infrastructure is improved [such as the government upgrading there roads, schools, universities, etc].

The urban fabric is out of balance and a proposal for a green lung will link a large number of public buildings and residentail areas to one and other. [as a vertical link]

CHARACTER _ To promote character in townscape and landscape by responding to and reinforcing locally distinctive patterns of development. [Meetse-A-Bophela school]

CHANGE _ Changing the road material of Mathane road, will slow down traffic and increase a level of awareness of change in the area. If the new road material is continued past the Meetse-A-Bophela school, it will unify and connect it to the civic building.

GUIDELINES _ Should reconise the unique nature of its location and cultural diversity. Must meet the requirements of the uses and users of the area. And it must maintain carefully considered connections with the main pedestrian routes.

CIVIC _ Can inspire a relationship between citizens and their govenrment [a ”WE CARE” attitude], which promotes confidence in the area. Capital investments in buildings have a strong influence on the staff moral.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT _ planning for the future, public consultation and participation [a strong community]

CONTEXT _ The project is seen as a place and not an isolated building

A CITY ATTRACTION _ Preferred destination, “OUR city”
